Why Hosting Security Settings Block Plugin Uploads
Some hosting environments have strict firewall or malware rules that block plugin uploads, especially if the plugin includes certain file types or exceeds predefined upload policies.
1. Check Error Message from Hosting Panel or WordPress
Often, hosting firewalls like ModSecurity will block the upload and show a generic or specific error. Take note of this and contact support if needed.
2. Temporarily Disable ModSecurity
If you’re using cPanel or a similar panel, look for the ModSecurity option and disable it temporarily for your domain. Try uploading the plugin again.
3. Upload via File Manager or FTP
- Extract the plugin ZIP on your computer.
- Upload the extracted folder to
wp-content/plugins/via File Manager or FTP. - Activate the plugin via the WordPress dashboard.
4. Rename Plugin File Temporarily
Sometimes specific file names trigger the block. Try renaming the plugin ZIP before upload (e.g., pluginname-custom.zip) and retry.
5. Contact Hosting Support
If none of the above works, ask your hosting provider to whitelist the plugin or explain which security rule is being triggered. They can often resolve this within minutes.
