✅ Step-by-Step Fix for “Destination Folder Already Exists” Error
When installing a plugin via the WordPress dashboard, you may encounter this frustrating error:
“Installation failed: Destination folder already exists.”
This typically happens if:
- A previous installation attempt was incomplete or failed.
- The plugin folder already exists in the
/wp-content/plugins/directory. - You deleted the plugin via dashboard but the files weren’t removed from the server.
Solution 1: Delete the Existing Plugin Folder via File Manager or FTP
- Access your website files using FTP (FileZilla) or cPanel > File Manager.
- Navigate to:
public_html/wp-content/plugins/ - Look for a folder with the same name as the plugin you’re trying to install.
- Right-click > Delete the folder.
- Go back to your WordPress dashboard and try uploading the plugin again.
Example: If you were installing “Elementor”, look for a folder named elementor.
Optional Cleanup (Recommended):
- Clear your WordPress and browser cache before reattempting the installation.
- Check if the plugin is still listed under “Plugins” even after deleting the folder. If so, delete it from the dashboard too.
Alternative Solution: Install via FTP
- Extract the plugin ZIP file on your computer.
- Connect to your site via FTP.
- Upload the extracted plugin folder to:
wp-content/plugins/ - Go to WordPress > Plugins > Activate your plugin.
